When Krysten found out there was sleep apnea stores opening up across BC with a unique model of patient care, and she wanted to get involved! So in June 2018, she moved from Edmonton, Alberta, and started her role as Sleep Clinician at the Snore MD Parkgate/Seymour Pkwy sleep clinic.
In your opinion, what makes Snore MD sleep clinics so great?
Snore MD definitely approaches patient care differently than other companies where you need to book an appointment between Monday and Friday to access your respiratory therapist. Here at Snore MD, there is no need for an appointment, patients can pop in whenever they have the time to, and we’re open on the weekend to help make accessing your respiratory therapists that much easier. There’s no need to take time off work.
In addition to this, our vigilant monitoring is a great asset! Snore MD has really invested in technology that lets me thoroughly monitor my patients, that lets me identify issues before they become a problem or before the patient has to complain.
What are the most common complaints you hear from sleep apnea patients?
Well, a lot of people think CPAP therapy is very plug and play but it absolutely is not. Every person has their specific settings that are comfortable for them. We see new patients walk in who haven’t had thorough attentive care previously. Their CPAP equipment settings aren’t right for them. Common complaints are that they have issues with their masks; their pressures aren’t good; they’re not getting the benefit of the therapy, or they’re not tolerating their therapy. These are people who didn’t have a good start to begin with.
Who is it that you’re seeing at your sleep clinic?
All walks of life! Sleep apnea affects the young and the old, male and female, everyone essentially can have sleep apnea. We see people from every age demographic!
What sets Snore MD Parkgate/Seymour Pkwy apart from other sleep clinics?
Definitely our patient care! Our atmosphere is also a little more casual, a little more relaxed. It’s more convenient for patients, they can just walk right in, the location is central and parking is available. Which is a main concern we’ve heard from patients, especially our more elderly patients who find it more difficult to find appropriate parking downtown. All in all, it is excellent customer service and convenience that sets us apart.
What do you love about working with your patients?
I get to see the positive impact of my help, the huge improvement in their overall general well-being and quality of life when they’re sleeping properly and getting the adequate rest again. It’s amazing the changes that people don’t notice. Their eyes are brighter and their demeanour improved. They’re more optimistic looking, happier! They don’t realize that a lot of it was just little things over the years that their poor sleep was causing, so it’s awesome to literally see people turn around 180 degrees after getting great sleep.
Do you have any stories that reflect your day-to-day?
I had a patient who had such severe sleep apnea to the point where he wasn’t able to participate in his son’s life. His pre-teen son was making jokes and comments, “Will dad even remember?”, “Is he even going to be awake through this?”, or “Should dad even bother coming to this because he is not going to be able to stay awake!”. One of the biggest differences we saw following sleep therapy was that this man was able to have a better relationship with his son, and that his son really noticed that he had his dad back!
